The Weaving Project | Eva. B Stokely Elementary Families Get Involved | CCSD
All / Holidays and Seasons / Spring
A unique opportunity at Eva B. Stokely Elementary School, in Shiprock, New Mexico, took students and their parents through the process of weaving a traditional Navajo rug during the spring of 2016. The project ran for 10 weeks, during which participants would learn about the processes of weaving from shearing the sheep, to cleaning and preparing the wool, setting up the loom and starting to weave, all of which was taught by master weaver Susie Rose Wood. Sponsored by the school’s Dual Language Program, the ultimate goal of the project was to present a natural, culturally relevant setting where participants could learn the Navajo language.
