Families gathered to hear Navajo traditional Coyote and Constellation stories and play Navajo String Games at Central Consolidated School District’s Family Literacy nights hosted by the Bernice L. Pioche Benally Cultural Heritage Center. Bilingual coordinator Candace Keams-Benally explained these community events promote cultural and language literacy within Navajo communities. Family literacy nights are held for four weeks during the winter, spring, summer, and fall in Newcomb / Naschitti, and Kirtland / Ojo Amarillo, as well as in Shiprock.
