This week our lit terms include poetry, rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, assonance, allusion. Poetry is the art of rhythmical composition, written or spoken, for exciting pleasure by beautiful, imaginative, or elevated thoughts. This often involves emotion and employs a variety of other techniques and devices. Poems can take a wide variety of forms from completely free verse to rigid structure. Rhyme is the matching of sounds within their corresponding points in words- usually at the end. Ex. Box, socks, rocks, docks, fox Rhythm Refers to a natural meter or pattern of sounds evident based on syllable stresses, counts, and line lengths. Consider the rhythm you hear when reading this line out loud: Onomatopoeia is a term that phonetically spells out a sound. Ex. Buzz, zap, boom, bang, zip. Assonance Poetic device with two or more words near one another repeating the same vowel sound but starting with different consonant sounds. Ex. Men sell the wedding bells Don't throw the soda at the boat. Allusion is a reference in a work to another work of literature, film, mythology etc. Ex. This place feels like the Garden of Eden (Simile and allusion to the bible) The pallid bust of Palace [of Athena] just above my chamber door... (Allusion to Greek mythology) General Grant on the $50 bill in "Black Coffee" is a historical allusion to the civil war.
