Sketch Up
Architecture
Students creating a building in Sketch Up
So here we are in sketchup and I want to go through just a couple of ways of making your 5 bedroom house something maybe something like that. But maybe a little simpler. So to do it, of course, keep the keep your guy around because you want to use them for measurement. But usually start off with your simple basic structure of a rectangle on the ground. Now, you can start off with just generalizing the size, always checking the bottom right hand corner. So this one comes out to be about 61 by a 115 feet. And I can add another room over here just by kind of doing that. So there's a room there. So let's say I have a weird shaped house like that. I'm going to go in. I'm going to take care of the lines by clicking on them and hitting the delete key, getting rid of the lines I don't need to make sure these are drawing together. There we go. So there's, you know, if you had to make a weird shaped house, there's kind of a house.
Now there are several ways of going about doing this. I think one of the simplest ways to do it is to just grab your pencil tool and start finding some midpoints, there is a midpoint there, and if you draw it straight, notice the red line, and I'll get the midpoint of this line. Just make sure it's got a color on it when you do it, and you'll have some easier ways to figure out. I just drew some midpoints in. I'll probably get rid of these later. But it helps me figure out at least the midpoints of some sharpened walls. Now these aren't my rooms, I'm just putting these in for guidance. So where's the entrance of my house? That's what I'm going to think of first. So I'm going to have the entrance probably over here in the corner. I'll have it over here. This will be my living room area. I'm kind of planted out, got a couple of bedrooms, kitchen, maybe some entertainment over here. So once I know where things are going to be, I can start planning things out. So to start raising up the walls, all I have to do now, and I'm going to use some of these as rooms. As I grab my push pull key and I hold control down and I start pulling up and it should turn white, now a single story house is ten feet so I go one zero apostrophe enter.
There's that room, and now the rest of them all I have to do is pull them up and touch the other top of the ceiling, and they'll all pull up to the same height. That's called inferencing. Now, if it turns out gray like that, that means my control button didn't work. Hold control it should turn white. Make sure they're turning white and just touching the top of that one's gray, no good. And there it goes to white. And I touch the top up, that one's gray. There we go. And yeah, I'll go ahead and do all of them. So I have my basic structure of my house right now. Next thing I want to do once I get my single story house. So I wanted to double story house. It's pretty simple. I just hold control down, and I start bringing it up to 20 feet. So let's make this. So now this is not 30 feet tall, actually. So it's ten feet, ten feet and ten feet. So if I wanted to bring it down 20 to 20, I could just start pushing it down till I'll bring it down to the end here. Oh, sorry. I'll bring it down a couple of feet, three, 6, 7, 8, 9 minus ten feet minus about ten feet. Right about there. So I made a little two story section on my house over here. I usually start with by putting in the door. If that ever happens, just scroll back, sorry. I usually put the door in, so I'm going to put a fancy door over here, let's see where I write about here. And the way I do that is I grab the pencil tool, and I'll put it in the middle of this structure.
So I'm going to find the middle mode point there it is. And I start drawing a line, and then I just type, and I can click or anything. So a door may be 8 foot door. Enter. And it gives me that 8 foot line. Then I just bring my mouse this way. I haven't clicked yet at all. I'll do, let's see, make it a double door about 6 32s about 6 feet. 6. Enter. Now I just got to bring a line down. And I'll make this a two section door. 6 creators again, it is now. So there's my door. Thank you. Sorry for the interruption. At this point, you want to start working maybe on the inside of your house. And the way to do that is to just start hiding some walls, so I click on the wall, I do a right click, right click and hit hide, and I can start seeing the walls. I have little squares here, sorry. I can get rid of the hidden jumps today. I start. There's one room I could start working on that. Now, I don't want this wall. I want it to be open. So I just delete that wall. And do I want a wall over here? Let me see what I got. No, I want this wall. I want this to be open too. So I'll delete this wall. There we go. And I don't want this wall either. I don't want that. So I just opened up my room. I am going to keep my kitchen closed. This is going to be a big, big dining room, entertaining area.
I've got a couple of big bedrooms over here. Starting to look okay. Now, so I want to start putting things in. I can go grab things from the warehouse, start doing some colorants, more callings, but usually what I do is after this, I'll start putting in Windows. So I'm going to put a big window in right on this. This is like, you know, my biggest window, like the showcase window, right here, it's massive. Go grab some glass, put it on there. Big window at that side of the house. You can see everywhere. Over here we have some smaller windows. I'll put one window. I'm going to put three windows so I draw a window, and then what I'll do is I want to use this shape a couple of times, is I'll select it, I'll hold down control and D, grab that move tool, I'll excuse me. Select it just to control D and I got two of them. I let go. I didn't hold control D, I just control D and I'll do control D again, control D, let's make it a duplicate. And I have three windows right there. Notice when I brought them across, I had the green lines. And again, I'll go ahead and finish those off. Like that. So I usually put my windows in. My doors and windows. Pretty much like a house really goes. So let's focus on this door real quick. So when you have a door like this and you want to make it look more like a door, you just select one of the sides, go to tools, offset, and you can start pulling in and make like, you know, a little rim around the door there. And I'll do it to the other side again, select it, tools, offset, put your mouse in the middle of it, and pull it over, trying to match them up a little bit. And it goes that.
You can make it even cooler, you know, grab a line, find the middle point, middle point, tools, offset, sorry, select inside, tools, offset, and you can get a triple effect going there, and then one of them you can even make it a window. So there, tools, offset, bring it in, there we go. Then you just color it in and I'm going to grab some wood, here, and finish it off with some wood accents, maybe a different color would around the ends. And you can put door knobs and such. I also like using the tool to the offset tool. Give that this outside edge a little bit. So if you select the outside of it, you could put a little rim around it. This is fine though for now, I'll leave it like that. Occasionally I do like push pulling some of the parts here. It gives a little dimension. To your door. And right there. So that's pretty cool. So doors, windows, do the floor plan, hide things. Remember to click on things when you want to hide them so you can work inside, so I'd to continue this, I'd put doors and windows all in here with doors so you can get through nice big doors too, you know, you could put big doors and a door doesn't have to be an actual door. Like when you're inside, just take a rectangle, draw it, select it, and delete it. Leave it like that. Because when we go to walk through these things, door like this, you can't open up.
So you could just leave us a hole for a door is fine. You know, just a passageway. This way, when you get inside, you start walking around in here in VR, you can walk around and see the stuff that you got. And that'll be really cool. So almost all structures can be made starting off just on the bottom, just like we did. Hopefully that helps a little bit. I don't want to go over ten minutes on this. Remember to hold control to pull things up. Then do doors, get a door of the good size, then do your Windows, then hide things and decorate. And that's really what we're looking for. 5 bedrooms, nice and neat. It'll be cool to walk around and be creative, add some cool stuff. Thanks for watching. Bye.
