Singular and Plural Nouns
English
In this video, we are going to learn about singular and plural nouns. A singular noun names one person place thing or idea. An example would be boy. A plural noun names more than one person place thing or idea. Example would be boys, which names more than one boy. There are different rules for forming plural nouns, and in this video we are going to look at four of those rules. The first rule is add S at the end of the noun. Our first singular noun is girl. We can make that plural by adding the S and turning it into girls. School becomes schools and flour becomes flowers. Here are some other examples of adding S to make plural nouns. And I'm just going to read the plural examples in this column. The cows, chickens, arrows, girls, houses, turtles, and friendships. So in each of these plurals, we added an S the second rule is to add E S to nouns ending in S CH or SH or X or Z our first example is box. To make this plural, we need to add ES to get boxes. Next example is peach, which ends with a CH, to make it plural we need to add ES for peaches, our next example is brush, which ends with an SH, so we want to add ES for brushes. And our last example is bus, which ends with an S so we want to add ES to get buses. Here are some other examples of words that end in S, CH, SH, X, or Z, and how we make them plural by adding E S. Examples are wishes, churches, buses, boxes, successes, and axes. If a word ends in a consonant followed by a Y, we change the Y to an I and add ES. First example is family. You'll see it ends in a Y after a consonant L so I want to change that Y to an I and add ES for families. All right, there are example is daisy. There's the consonant S, followed by a Y, so I change the Y to an I and add E S for daisies. Here are some other examples of words that end with consonant Y, where we change the Y to an I and add E S the plurals are ladies, skies, stories, jellies, babies. Our last rule for this video is that for many but not all nouns ending with F or FE, we change the F to a V and add ES. The first example is low. Change the F to a V and add ES for loaves. Another example is Elk, change the F to a V, and add ES for elves. Here are some other examples of words where we change the F or the FE to a V and add ES. We have lives, wives, knives, thieves, shelves, leaves, halves, calves, scarves, and wolves. Watch out for these words, though, because these are words that end in an F, but you do not change it to a V and add ES. Groups, cheats, beliefs, and clips. In the next video, we are going to talk about irregular plural nouns. Nouns that do not follow any of the rules that we just learned about.
