Teaching Sequencing By Tens Off The Decuple
I first graders, we're gonna work on some place value work again today. Some of you may have done it with me on the last lesson or some of you may have had your teacher do their own video. So we're going to work with our bundles in our sticks again. And today we're going to be working on counting by tens, sometimes that doesn't always sound like ten, 20, 30, 40, like you're used to counting by tens. So that's what we're going to practice today. So I'm going to start with a number. That looks like this. So take a second to think about what number that is. Hopefully you said 30 5. So what happens is if I'm counting by tens, it means that I'm adding a group of ten. So I have 35 if I add ten, now I have 45. If I add another ten counting by tens, here's my ten.
Now I have 55. Another ten. What would it be? 55 plus ten. 65. We're just going to push these over a little. So I have 65. Plus ten more. 75. What if I added another ten? 85. You're right. And another ten, 95, what will this one gets a little tricky? What family comes after the 90 family? Yeah, it goes to 100. So we have 95. Now we have 100 5 because we still have these 5 ones over here. So 105. Let's do it one more time. 105. Plus ten more. Now, right here I have 100 ten. But I still have these 5. You guys know, ten and 5 makes 15. So now we went from one 105 to 100 15 when I added that ten. Okay. I'm going to let you practice one. Okay. What if I start with this number? This number is sometimes tricky for kids. I have a group of ten. And two more, two more ones. So I have the number, say it. 12, you're right. I know you get it. So I have 12. If I'm counting by tens, now what do I have? 22. So 12 plus ten more is 22. 22 and another ten is 32 you got it. Another ten. 42, you got it. And then 52, you're rowing. 62. I hope you're saying them with me. 72. 82. 92. 102. Say it. 100 12. You can do it all the time. 100 22.
We're going to do one more and I'm going to write on a board. This one says we're going to start with the number four. So I'm just going to put four ones down here. So I have just four. If I want to count by tens, that means I'm adding a group of ten. What number does that become? So I had four. I added one group of ten. And now I have 14. Sometimes that's the hardest one when you go from just the single ones, and then add a ten. That's pretty hard for kids. So four plus ten more is 14. If I'm counting by tens, and I add another ten. So now I started with 14, I added a group of ten. So I was at 14, I added a group of ten, and now I'm at. Did you say 24, you're right. 24, I had a group of ten. Goals. You got it. 34. Let's do two more. 34. Plus another ten. I hope you said. 44. And one more. Be ready to say it. I had 44. And when I added a group of ten and now I have 54.
Take a look. Until somebody that is sitting with you all about the patterns that you see. You can push the pause button if you'd like. If that's easier and then get back to listening. So did you notice the pattern of the ones place all stayed as four? Because these four ones never changed. We were just adding our ten. So the only thing that was changing was our digit in the tens place. So we went from four to 14 to 24 to 34 to 44, and then we ended up at 54. We added a group of ten each time. You can go ahead and give this a try at your house. If you have something to bundle in tens, that would be awesome. If you don't, you can just practice with the numbers and see if you can count by tens. Starting from any number you choose. Have a great day.
