Doing art Self Portraits With A Mask
Today we're going to be making our self-portraits with a mask and it will be a reveal type of thing where you lift the mask and you can see your smile underneath it. You need two pieces of some kind of paper, some scissors, a pencil to draw with one small piece of tape, and something color with. You can use crayons or you can use markers or if you have some colored pencils, but you want to choose colors that represent you. So I have this one for my skin. That's pretty close. And I have some pink ones because right now I have pink hair. The first thing I want to do is draw the shape of my face. You can do it like a cartoon if you want and make it round, or you could do it more realistically and make it more like an oval. Now notice I've drawn the line at the top of my head very likely. I didn't draw it dark. I'm going to need to erase it because my hair is going to go over that line.
Now that I have the shape, I want to put in the eyes and the eyes are actually almost halfway between the top of the head and chin. So about halfway between is where I want to draw my eyes and I'm going to start just with two little dots. You can see the nose goes halfway between the chin line and the eyes line right here is where my nose will be. I'm going to draw it as a U like this. And then a small U here and a small U there. To make my nose and then the mouse will be right here. And I'm going to draw a happy smiling mouth. Now I'm going to draw out the rest of the eye. So over the pupil, I have the hood of my eye right here. And my eye is fairly flat on the bottom. And then I have the iris. Part of the eye. Darken my pupil. Now I have three freckles on the left side of my face. When you draw the ears, they should at the bottom of the ear should be aligned with the nose.
So I've got this line to show where the top of my head is, and my hair's a little bit fluffy, so I'm gonna put that up just a little. And then I'm going to draw hair that goes over my forehead. If you're a boy, you might be drawing like a hairline here. Maybe your hair goes like this when you have a hairline. Okay, once you get your face to a point where you like it, then you're gonna take your second piece of paper and put it over the top. Now I can see my face through this. Just a little. If your paper's too thick, then you might put it up against a window, and that makes it easier to see. So if you want to trace something, you can put it up against your window and then you can see to trace because of the light. But I can see okay. So I'm actually gonna trace, spread along here, where my face is and masks are supposed to go over the mouth and over the nose so I can see where my nose is. I could see where my mouth is.
So I'm gonna draw my mask to go over my mouth and nose like this. And I'm gonna make it just a little bit bigger to give myself some wiggle room. The masks that I've been wearing are just regular surgical masks that have these sort of folds in it. So you just sort of fold it in the center like this. So I've got like three or four letter vs to make it look like it's folded. I've seen a lot of really cool masks online though. So if you want to decorate your mask in a different way, then you can do that. Go ahead and cut this out. So now I have my face and my mask. I need to color this area before I put any tape on it. My face has a lot of pink in it. Like a lot of pink. Maybe I have sun damage from not wearing sunscreen when I should have. But I'm going to take some pink and go over a few areas. Like around my nose right here, I'm a little bit pinker. That makes it look a little bit more like me. So my birthday is on Friday and I will be 39 and because I've been on the earth for 39 years, I have some wrinkles around my eyes.
So I'm just gonna take this gray and add a little bit of wrinkling here, you kids won't need this because you're all young and sprightly. I'm also a little bit darker in here in the inner corner of the eye. Because of my age, so I'm just gonna make that a little bit darker. And underneath my eyes from not getting enough sleep, I have these sort of circles. Part of that's just genetics I've had them when I was little too. But this is just part of my face. And then I can actually take my pencil and go over and soften them a little bit so they don't look quite so aggressive. So you can see I've colored most of my face. I'm going through an adding something called shading. And this is going to give it some depth. So there are certain parts of my face that are further back and away from the light. And in order to make those show that they're further back, I'm just going along with Brown and adding some brown. And I'm going to add brown here in the corner and along the edges of my face. Where my hair would be shadowing it from light.
So my hair is blond with pink in it. And sometimes I wear a flower, so I put a flower in my hair. I'm going to be using some pinks in my hair. I'm actually going to be using some yellow and some brown to show the edges and I think I might also use a little bit of peach in my hair. All right, here's my mask. I'm just going to make my mask blue. All right, kids. Now that I have my face the way that I like it and I've colored my mask, I'm going to tape it on. But yeah, I'm going to tape it on. I want to be able to lift it up so that you can see my smile. Yeah, so it's a reveal type of thing. So I'm doing the tape all the way across the top. You could do just a small piece of tape on your nose if you want. But I don't want my family to destroy this. So I'm using a nice big piece of tape and you can see under here that I'm smiling. See? Isn't that cool? Yeah. Yeah, it's like for me behind the mask.
Now there's one thing I forgot. What's that one thing? Good job. My name. So I'm going to put my name at the top. I actually want to do something really cool with the background. You can go around yourself with black marker. Okay, so I've got a black line around the outside and what I want to do is put my name up here, kind of coming out from behind me. So I'm going to do a straight line up. Oh, that's not straight. That's wavy. Oh, goodness. Okay. I'm going to make this into an M. Okay, I see that my M is kind of big. I'm a little scared. I might run out of room, so I'm going to actually write the rest of my name in pencil. So that if I do run out of room, I can erase and start over. On this space, I'm going to write in some things that I really like. So this is going to be different for each person, but I really like music. Art. My kid and I like the season. Fall. And if you want, you know it's your birthday today.
There's a cat like in your birthday cake, it's your birthday today. I knew it was you in there. I knew it. I knew it was you. Here is my daughter Zoe's self portrait with her mask. Now that we're all done, what do we need to do? Clean up. Yes. So we want to make sure we throw away all of our scraps. Why do we clean up our mess? So you keep letting us do our projects. Yes. Yes. So that you can keep using our supplies, right? 'cause I trust that you'll clean it up when you're done.
