Roanoke The Lost Colony
Film
Over 400 years ago in the summer of 1587, 117 men, women and children arrived from England on the shores of Roanoke island, North Carolina. These brave pioneers established the very first English settlement in the new world. Yet they later vanished into the untamed wilderness, creating a mystery that still haunts us today. The mystery of the lost colony. The story of the lost colony begins in the England of Shakespeare and Queen Elizabeth I. Legend has it that a dashing young soldier and poet sir Walter Raleigh captured the attention of his queen in a most dramatic way. Elizabeth granted her handsome new friend a charter or legal permission to explore the new world, so long as Raleigh stayed right there with her in England to help prepare for possible war with Spain. Way shell grand master is charred. For exploration. So, in the spring of 1584, Raleigh chose Philip amadas and Arthur Barlow to lead a voyage of exploration. Now by the cast of the stones, you may go. I must study. Take my sword, Philip, planted in the soil of the new world that I might be there with you. And God speed. For more than two months, that first expedition sailed across the Atlantic Ocean. Until finally. After thanking God for their safe arrival, the expedition went ashore. We take possession of this lahad in the name of her most gracio smiley, Elizabeth. Trouble this way. The explorers soon made contact with the region's native people, and gifts were exchanged. But a few things did not change hands. No. Weapons shall not be exchanged. For 6 weeks, the visitors explored Roanoke island guided by two Native Americans, manteo and WAN cheese. And when they returned to England, they took back glowing reports of the region, as well as their two Native American Friends. They ought to apply looking people. My Marina. Their return provided great publicity for sir Walter Raleigh, who was already at work on a second expedition. To lead his new venture, Raleigh chose two experienced military men. Lieutenant Ralph lane, a soldier well known as someone who loved to fight. And his own cousin, sir Richard grenville. I knew it would be because of the beginning. As his pilot for the second voyage, Raleigh chose Simon ferdinando, the pilot of the first expedition. Yet few among the crew trusted this Portuguese navigator. And many now blamed him for wrecking the queen's own ship, the Tiger, upon its arrival, Roanoke island. Many provisions perished in the accident, including much of the expedition's gunpowder, and the seeds for planting food crops. You pull yourself a monster to pilot, Simon, the Portuguese. And the English also lost WAN cheese, who decided to return to his own people. Yet Mario remained with the English and became one of their most trusted and important allies. The white men learned much about their Native American hosts. But much of what they learned did not fit their idea of English civilization. Do your people. Truth they like this now brew. Most of what we know about these early Native Americans, their customs, society, manners, and appearance, was recorded by Thomas Harriet, England's leading scientist, and John white, the expedition's artist. Wife in the Harriet also prepared maps and detailed reports of the surrounding countryside. From the rivers and sounds of the coastal plain to the rich deep harbors on the Chesapeake Bay, a region they found better suited for a permanent colony. Yet the expedition found little evidence of the fabulous riches most of the soldiers had hoped to find. Still bring us good news. It is a most with deep harbors on the sea. And what of the natives do they speak of gold and pearls? They watch. But we found the hostile war than these. I governor, it appears that this new lahan is better suited for plaited English man than for finding easy wealth. As the soldiers grew frustrated at finding no treasure the natives became skeptical of their visitors intentions. Especially after an incident at a Costco gak. The village of WAN cheeses people. Sounds like. Ace shift for your achieve. The meeting scene peaceful enough. But it was obvious that the English were not welcomed by all. And after the English departed, grenville discovered that his favorite goblet was missing. Certain that the villagers had stolen it, he sent back soldiers to look for it, but found no one to question. A Costco gak was deserted. Gave their chief. So, this be the answer of one she sent his paper. So I shall be with fire. The natives tried to make peace with the English. They gave them food, and they let them build a fort and a village nearby. Yet poor harvest that season left little food for the Indians to share. Thus, lord grenville returned to England for supplies, leaving the hot tempered Ralph lane and 107 men behind. Months passed without relief from England, however, and as the expedition supplies dwindled dangerously low. One of the region's most powerful leaders, chief wingina, cut back on the food he gave to the white men. And when the English heard rumors that when Gina planned to attack them, Ralph lane made a soldier's decision. Attack English soon. What? We shall surprise that devil and attack first. Captain, armed the men. We shall treat with these savages. This baby madness. All right, start a victory. I'm Thomas wake up. Here, my lord, wingina will trouble us no more. Although they planted native corn in the spring of 1586, the English wondered if they'd lived to harvest it. In addition to the daily threat of hunger and hostile neighbors, they faced danger from the sea. From the ships of the mighty Spanish fleet. They be English for sergeant. Tis like the heart albeit, which is not master grinning wheelchairs but sir Francis Drake's. The famous seaman sir Francis Drake was returning to England after looting and attacking the Spanish in the West Indies. Intending just to look in on the colony, he offered to leave his distressed countrymen with food and supplies. As well as a ship with crew and weapons. And for this fine English settlement. Yet the forces of nature destroyed the best part of his offer. For the colony, she's blown out to say. Good God help us. On our new ship gone? Are we to be left here to rot on the road and look? That fate you must decide master Lee. Stay and take what's the plays they can give or sail with us for real hunt. But choose. Quick, treacherous walk. The English abandoned Roanoke island on June 9th, 1586, just days before granville's relief mission arrived. And in the rush to load the colony's goods, sailors impatiently pitched most of white and Harriet's maps, papers, and specimens into the sea. That would be a year of our work. The people of England must know what it's here. We are set to save men the hype us. Through it. Joe. Is this hopeless? I feel your must give it up. Come on. Back in England, however, white and Harriet used their knowledge and experience to urge Raleigh to establish a new kind of colony. With women and children. I think it all matters. John white speaks truly sir Walter. We must transplant the whole of English society, not only our soldiers, nonsense. We are conquerors not farmers. You see such as been there away with the natives. It's time for a new approach. All right, room. You, John white. So gather and leave the new colony. Select your family swells to the wonderful chance. My life here while white recruited colonists among the country's tradesmen and farmers, laborers and soldiers. Raleigh, meanwhile, also knew he had to find wealthy investors to raise funds for the new colony. He was better guard our investments. It did sort of. Women and children, and that savage contrary, why we have yet to make that plan succeed in Ireland. Ah, but this be not Ireland gentlemen.
