Read aloud
Reading
Hi boys and girls. Today we're going to be doing a read aloud. I'm misses Cantwell. And I'm going to be reading snowmen all year. The author is Carolyn buhner and the illustrations were done by Mark buner. This book was dedicated to Joyce and T what do you notice about these pictures with the snowman? Do snowman lounge and pools? That picture of the snowman. He's lounging in a pool. Looks like he has a soda in his hand. Um. I'm already really curious about what's going to happen in this book. The main characters in the book are a boy and a snowman. The boy doesn't have a name throughout the book, and neither does a snowman. If you built a snowman, what would you name him? Or her? So the illustrator did something really fun with this book on each page they hid something. So as you're looking at the illustrations, I want you to look for two ducks, the ducks are always in a pair or a T. Rex. I haven't found the T. Rex yet. Maybe you'll find it. A rabbit, a cat, or a hidden snowman somewhere in the illustration. Let's talk about snow. What do you know about snow? Take a minute. Think about what facts do you know about snow? Well, snow is frozen ice crystals, and then they build on one another, and then they fall from the sky. And snow can only happen in extremely cold, places outside. So I want you to think about that as we're looking at the story, fun fact about snowmen, the largest snowman that was built was in 2008, and it stood a 122 feet high. That's like an 11 story building. So think about a hotel and going up 11 floors. I can't imagine building a snowman that big. Do you think they use their hands? Or do you think they had to use some machines to build a snowman that big? All right, now first, you're going to look for those ducks, the T. Rex, the cat, and the snowman, and think about whether this story could happen in real life. Oh, miss Campbell has to get her glasses. Hold on. Much better. I love to build a snowman on freezing winter days. But when the snow is bright and warm, my snowman melts away, that's a fact we know about snowmen. There's nothing but a puddle when my snowman disappears. If only he were magic and could stay with me all year. Could snowman stay with you all year? I teach him how to fly a kite, high above the trees. Do you guys see any of those hidden things in the illustrations? Take a minute and look. Where is that T. Rex? Oh, I see two ducks. A pair of ducks. And in the clouds, have you ever looked at the clouds to see if they make a shape? That looks like a cat right there. Oh, this illustrator's super sneaky. He put the snowman on the kite. Well, we got three, let's see what happens next. Then we would dig for a pirate gold or sail the 7 seas, I like this boy's imagination. And I was sure it does look like that snowman's having fun. Where are those hidden illustrations? Um. Well, I was only able to find the ducks. I see the two ducks. Good thing is that our library has this book so you guys will be able to come and look at the illustrations, maybe you'll find them. So what adventure is he going to take a snowman on next? What do you think? Oh, look at that. I know. I would love to see he would love to see the tigers at the zoo. I wonder what the tigers would think about the snowman at the zoo. Look, here's the hidden duck. And there's the second one. I'm only able to find those hidden ducks. So we've gone on a pirate hunt. We've gone to the zoo, where are we going to go next? Let's see. And at my birthday party, we would celebrate his two. Oh, that's awesome. I wonder what kind of cake snowmen like, let's see. We're looking for those hidden illustrations. I saw one, do you see it? That's not in the balloons. It's up here in the picture frame, the illustrator painted the two ducks. That's so clever. Where would you hide illustrations if you were making a book? Maybe in someone's hair. Oh my goodness. And we go on all the wildest rides at the amusement park. Do you think it's no man would even stay together on a roller coaster? Does this picture look like he's having fun or is he scared? What do you think? I think they're having a good time. Everyone has a big smile on their face. And that's a hint that you're having fun. Where are those hitting illustrations? So where's that T. Rex? And those ducks, I'm not able to find it on this one. Maybe you'll have better luck. But best of all would be the fireworks lighting up the dark. Look at our snowman and join the fireworks show and all those people. I'm looking for those ducks. I found them. Where would ducks mostly be? And land or on water. Those ducks are right here in the little tiny in the corner, but I even spied another one. The illustrator put a cat. There's a silhouette of a cat up in the fireworks. He's really creative, but still can't find that T. Rex. On stormy evenings, I would play my favorite games with him. What do you notice about the game? There's something really interesting about that game. They're playing chess. The snowman pieces are little snowmen instead of regular chess pieces. Let's see. Oh, I spied, I spied another snowman. So here's the other hidden snowman. Now where are those ducks? I see the two ducks. I've got two ducks. But no T. Rex. They said there's a T. Rex. Okay, wait a minute. Time out. What's going to happen when a snowman dives into the pool? Is this realistic? The boy says, I'm sunny days, I teach him how to dive and how to swim. I will say that is very funny though. And he's even wearing goggles. A spider two ducks hiding in the corner, but I don't see the cat and I don't see the T. Rex. Um. I wonder what they're gonna do next. On summer evenings in the dark, we chase some fireflies. They're putting the fireflies in the jar. And I spied those two ducks again. They're over there in the far corner. Or sleep out in the quiet Woods, beneath the starry skies. They're laying in hammocks. Under some pesky raccoons down here at the bottom, getting into their coolers. I spied the ducks. They're hiding. They're peeking around the tent right here. Where is that T. Rex? Okay, let's see. At the beach we play all day. He'd get very sandy. How would a snowman get stand off of him? That's silly. Um. Let's look for our ducks, our T. Rex, a cat and miniature snowman. See if we can find them in the illustration. I think I spied a few. I see a very curious duck peeking around the corner here. I see one over here. And that to me looks like a snowman in the clouds. Looking for that cat. And no, there's another little snowman picture right here. I don't see the cat, and I don't see the T. Rex. I like this story. It's pretty silly. We trick or treat on Halloween and bring home lots of candy. I guess a snowman really doesn't need a costume, does he? I'm looking for those ducks, the T. Rex and the cat. I spied the cat. Down here on the mat. It's a little picture of a cat. And I see my little duck friends here. And way up top. There's a teeny tiny snowman. But I still can't find the T. Rex. Maybe this is magic snow. Do you think it has to be magic snow? It will not, that will not disappear. And the snowman will be the one to stay with me all year. Looking, I see little ducks right here. I don't see those other characters. What would you do with magic snow? Would you build a snowman to stay with you all year? That would be pretty cool. So I want you to take a minute and just think about if you could build a snowman, a magic snowman. What would you do with him or her? Take a few minutes to think about it, and I'm going to have you tell your partner or tell someone sitting next to you, what you would do in just a minute, I want you to think. Where would you take your snowman? What would you do? All right, find your partner. Someone sitting close to you, and I want the person with the longest hair. Whoever has the longest hair gets to share first, I'm going to time you, you're going to get 30 seconds to tell the person next to you what you would do. All right, ready? Go. Okay. Finish what your telling your partner, all right? Come to a stop. And now the second person gets to share what they would do with their magic snowman. I'm timing you guys ready? And go. All right, wrap up what you're telling your Friends, what you would do. Bring it back, I need everybody to honor up eyes up here. Good job, guys. All right, so there's a whole series of these snowmen book that the illustrator hides different pictures in. If you can find the T. Rex, you're going to get a positive paw. Because I've looked through all of these books. And I can not find the T. Rex. So when you come to the library next time, please ask miss shore miss O'Hara for the snowmen series and see if you can find the hidden T. Rex in these illustrations. I hope everybody has a wonderful day. Bye.
