Planting Friendship Seeds
Gardening
This week in Mrs. Weller’s kitchen we are focusing on new friendships. We’re comparing the process of growing friends with growing plants. At the beginning of a new school year, students of all ages - from Pre-K through college - are scattering friendship seeds in hopes of starting some new friendships. Teachers, too, are planting friendship/relationship seeds as they get to know their students and create caring classroom communities. Friendship seeds, or social initiation skills, are the small but important things we do to let others know that we are interested in getting to know them and exploring a potential for friendship. Friendship seeds include: Using friendly body language; Greeting people by name; Asking questions to find common interests; Extending an invitation to spend more time together.
