PEMDAS
Math
Hi guys, today we're going to talk about order of operations, and when you think of order operations, you need to think about PEMDAS. Parentheses, exponents, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. In fourth grade, we don't really pay attention to the E for exponents, but you do need to pay attention to the rest. So this will be something you can also think about it as please excuse my dear aunt Sally and then just know what each of those means. So here is a problem and we're going to go ahead and go through it so that you can get the hang of things. You can use this and refer back to it if you're stuck on working on your own problem. So first, we're going to do parentheses. So whatever's in parentheses, four times three is in parentheses. So we're going to put a 12 underneath here, then if we scroll back to the top, the next one is multiplication. Well, the multiplication was already in the parentheses, so we've already taken care of that step. If there's multiplication outside of the parentheses, we would go ahead and do that next. We now do division. In this problem, there is no division. So we need to move on to addition. So we would take this 12 and carry down the rest of the problem. And now we need to do the addition. So 12 plus two is 14. We carry down the rest of the problem. And now our last one is subtraction. 14 minus one is 13. 13 is your answer to that problem
