Kids, we live in Montana. The name of our state literally means mountainous country in Spanish. We love our mountains. They’re so beautiful. But we ask ourselves all the time, where do they come from? How did they form? Well, first, let’s talk about the different kinds of mountains that there are.
To begin with, let’s understand that there are primarily four main types of mountains. There are folded mountains, there are block mountains, there are mountains made out of volcanoes, and then there are dome mountains. So, with all the different types of mountains, what are the Rocky Mountains formed from? According to a History Channel documentary that we’re gonna watch a little bit later, and I want you to pay attention to this, the Rockies is mainly made up of three types of mountains – folded mountains, dome mountains, and block mountains. We’re going to need to know this information later for a quiz.
So, we understand now that there’s a lot of different type of mountains in the Rockies. But what type of mountain are our Rockies? Our Saint Ignatius, Montana Mission Mountains. The Mission Mountains that we love and enjoy are folded mountains. These are the types of mountains that they also refer to as thrust mountains. Remember our lesson on tectonic plates? Where one gigantic portion of the Earth’s crust dives underneath another crust piece of the Earth and it shoves that huge thick plate up into the air and makes the mountains? That’s what our mountains are. They’re folded mountains and they are incredibly beautiful.
