Examples about Osmosis and Diffusion

Today I want to spend a little bit of time talking about self transport. In particular, I want to focus on passive transport. That is the forms of cell transportation that do not require the use of any energy. In our lecture, we discuss two types of passive transport, osmosis, which is the movement of water from high to low concentrations and diffusion, which is the movement of other small molecules such as sugar and salt from high to lead. I've got an example here on the board.

If I have myself here and my cell is 95% water and 5% sugar and I place that fell into a solution that is 15% sugar, 85% water, I can figure out which way water is going to move and which way the sugars are going to be. I have to remember my role that osmosis diffusion always goes high to love. So my water is high inside the cell, so it is going to move out towards the level. Now, of course, if water moves out, my cell shrinks. Sugar on the other hand is high outside. So sugars are actually going to diffuse into the cell.

This will continue until the cell and the solution reach equilibrium. Even at equilibrium, the molecule still move, it's just that that point the amount of water that comes out is equal to the amount of water that goes in, so there is no change in concentration.
