Multiplication of a Whole Number and a Fraction using visual models
Our target for today is I can multiply a whole number by a fraction using visual models. Let?s look at our problem. We are trying to figure out what three times three-fifths is. I know that that also means that we have three equal groups of three-fifths. And how do I know that these pieces are fifths. When I look at my whole it is divided into five pieces. One, two, three, four, five, and out of those five pieces I have one, two, three that are fully shaded so I know I have three-fifths. Now I have one group of three-fifths, two groups of three-fifths, three groups of three-fifths and I?m gonna place them in my whole to see how many wholes do I have from all of these fifth pieces. So one, two, three, four, five which makes one whole and one, two, three, four left over. So I have nine-fifths which is the same as one whole and four-fifths. Which is also the same thing as saying five-fifths plus four-fifths.
