(repeat) Verse 1 Early 1929 Right before The Great Depression A soldier was born Now let’s skip the guessing It was Martin Luther King, Jr. Later than sooner He would be a civil rights mover A good doer His father was a pastor His mother was a teacher He went to Morehouse at fifteen And became a preacher Gave his first speech At the church of Ebenezer It was obvious That he would be a civil rights leader In 1953 He married Coretta Scott And moved to Montgomery That’s where the boycott Of the buses came along Rosa Parks got locked up Cuz a white man needed a place to sit Didn’t give up her spot MLK said carpool Even if you gotta walk To get to where you going Don’t use the bus stops Supreme Court deemed Bus segregation illegal It was a major victory For the civil rights people Repeat Chorus Verse 2 King needed people In whom he could have confidence So he formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference In 1960 he was arrested for the sit-ins He got four months but he got some intervention The whole world’s watching America’s looking weak No violence was the method he used Like Ghandi preached His house got bombed He got death threats all the time But the thought of using violence Never even crossed his mind During marches they used hoses and attack dogs And arrested Dr. King Because the people refused to back off He wrote a letter locked up for eleven days About Biblical ideas and constitutional ways In 1963 A quarter million people Marched in DC And Dr. Martin Luther King spoke His I Have A Dream speech All men are created equal We should focus on the character Not the color of people Repeat Chorus Verse 3 He got Time magazine’s Man of the Year Next year ‘64 the Nobel Peace Prize Peace works and now you know There’s more in store With the Civil Rights Act of 1964 This act outlawed racism based on color Age, sex, national origin, and religion Finally in America it would seem That they supported Dr. Martin Luther King’s dream April 3rd ‘68 Dr. King was in Memphis He gave a speech that day And in it he mentions I’ve been to the mountaintop The promised land is official We’re goin’ to get there as a people But I might not get there with you The next day Was the infamy we all know well He was shot and killed walking out of a hotel The triggerman was James Earl Ray April 4th, 1968 We still mourn that day
