Are there really animal hybrids like wolphins, ligers, and zorses? Find out in this episode. Also find out about the most fantastic hybrid that you could imagine at the end of the video!
Welcome to episode two of I Did Not Know That, Ligers and Tigons and Zorses, Oh My! In this episode we are going to try and answer the question are hybrids real?
Hybrids, well of course you have your jackalope, your catbird, well then you got your cute little mermaid there. Of course they are not real any old fool knows they?re fake.
Not true. Animals like ligers, tigons, and zorses are real. Hybrid animals do exist.
It?s hard to believe.
Not really, Tommy. Now obviously the jackalope, the catbird, and yes that cute little mermaid were fakes. The simplest way to explain this is that for animals to produce offspring they must be of the same kind. For example the canine family. You have wolves, coyotes, and hundreds of variations of dogs. Most can breed and produce offspring with each other. Same is true with the feline family. You have lions, tigers, panthers and many more of that kind. If they crossbreed many can produce offspring but you could never have a catdog because they are not of the same kind. Animals must be of the same kind or they can?t reproduce. Which makes me a little sad because I think the coolest animal ever would be a bear/gorilla or what I like to call a bearilla. But there is the possibility of a Saint Bernard/Chihuahua mix or what you?d call a Saint Chihuahua and that?s almost as cool.
Hybrids are more common than you?d think. The hybrid you are probably most familiar with is the mule. A mule is a cross between a male donkey and a female horse. It?s been around for thousands of years because it had the strength and endurance that neither horses or donkeys had, the mule played a key role in the development of the United States. As long as we?re horsing around, let?s talk about the equine family. Aside from mules, some of the other animals in the hybrid family are a zebra/horse which is called a zorse. A zebra/donkey which is called a zonkey. And when the parents are a zebra and a pony the offspring is called a zony. Yeah I have to admit that?s pretty cute.
Then we have the unicorn which is a cross between a? no that?s fake. Let?s throw that one out.
Let?s get back to dogs. Their common ancestor is the wolf. Once dogs were domesticated, people began developing hybrids to help human. Let?s look at the dogs something or as some people fondly call them, wiener dogs. They?re ancestry may go all the way back to the time of the egyptian pharaohs. Their bodies are long and narrow and some think that they are kind of funny to look at. But don?t laugh because there is a reason for this. Dachshunds were bred to go into underground tunnels and chase out rabbits and badgers for hunters. People probably crossed terriers with bloodhounds to create this brave little dog. Think about that the next time you might want to giggle when you see one. Okay let?s take a look at some unusual canine hybrids. A coyote and a wolf produce a coywolf. The parents are a dingo and a dog you?ve got a dingodog. And a coyote and a dog will produce a coydog.
Now it?s time to talk about some cool cats. An average size adult male lion weighs around four hundred pounds and is seven to eight feet long. A female bengal tiger weighs around four hundred pounds and is six to nine feet long. Now get this, when a lion and a tiger have a cub it?s called a liger. Now the average liger can grow to be ten to twelve feet long and weigh over seven hundred pounds. Some have weighed over one thousand pounds which makes the the biggest cats in the world. If a male tiger and a female lion have a cub it?s called a tigon. But for some reason they don?t go to the tremendous size of their cousins the ligers.
Okay to finish this up let?s look at a few more very interesting hybrids. If the parents are a grizzly bear and a polar bear you have yourself a grolar bear. A swan and a goose will produce a swoose. And a whale and a dolphin will produce a wolphin.
To close this episode up, I?m gonna let you in on a little secret. In the near future you may be able to see the most fantastic hybrid of all time. Scientists are inserting the DNA of a woolly mammoth into lab-grown elephant cells. The last woolly mammoth died about three thousand six hundred years ago. They think they are only about one year away from producing an elephant/woolly mammoth hybrid. I have to admit that?s even cooler than a bearilla.
