This Lego model is based on an escapement that dates back to 14th century Europe; the verge and folio mechanism was succeeded by the pendulum clock which was much more accurate. The vertical axle is called 'verge'; the verge escapement drives a horizontal balance wheel, called 'foliot'. The rate of the clock could be adjusted by sliding weights in or out on the foliot bar. In this model, the balance wheel was replaced by a horizontal rod. You can watch a video in which two Lego escapement mechanisms, 'Verge and Foliot' and 'pendulum' type operate side by side. Observe the motion as well as listen to the tick-tock sound; Which escapement offers a better regulated movement?
