Reading aloud the book called Same, Same but Different
Hi Friends, it's Miss Bailey and today we are going to be reading a book. One of my personal favorites, this book is called same same but different. This book talks a lot about diversity in how things are different, but they also can be the same. Before we get started, I want everyone to take a look at the cover of the book. What are some of the things that you notice about the cover? Also, what do you think is going to happen in the story without even reading it? See if you can pick up any hints by looking at the cover of the book. Here is the back of the book if that helps also.
How do you think this story will end? And do you think the boys will remain friends? Do you think they won't remain friends? Also, what cities do you think the boys live in? So go ahead and think about those questions. You can answer them if you want to. You don't have to. Mister July will gladly talk about it. And as we get into the book, I'm going to stop along the way and ask you some questions. Feel free to answer them. You do not have to by any means. All right. Before we get started reading, I wanted us to do a picture walk. All right, so here is the first pay, and I would like you to think of what's going on in the pictures. You can keep it in your head, you can raise your hand and talk about it.
You can talk to your Mac and cheese partner. What are some of the things that you notice in the book? As you can see on this first page, there is an American flag, which represents the United States, so one of them might be from the United States. And as you turn the page, we see things that would not be found in the United States. So maybe they're from two different countries. As we go, I'm going to say something that I notice. So on this page right here, I noticed that there's a couple of monkeys in the boy is up in the tree. Climbing. Maybe that suggests he likes monkeys or he likes climbing trees or he likes being outside. It can mean so many different things.
As we turn the page, we see one little boy's family right here. It looks like it's mom, dad, and a sibling. And then over here we see a big family. As we go to the next page, we see some animals, and on this page, we see a dog. Looks like he's also feeding a fish. What do you notice on this page? Do any of these things appear here in the United States? Do we see some of these things here in the United States? Here, it looks like we have some tall buildings. Maybe he lives in a big city. Here there isn't stores or anything. They have these little markets that are outside where they sell food. And other like blankets and rugs and stuff like that. As we keep going, you can see that more right here. Looks like he's on the school bus.
This is the alphabet. What do you notice on this page? All right, so now that we have done the picture walk, does anything stick out to you as there anything that you might have questions about? Are you interested in the book? If you have any questions, go ahead and ask miss July. She can always get back to me on those questions. So now we are going to get into reading the book. So this is same same but different. In art class, I painted a picture of my world. My teacher mailed it across the ocean. This is my world. A boy drew back with colors of the sea. This is my world, same same, but different. PS, who are you? This is me. My name is Elliott, and I love to climb trees. My name is kalash. And I love to climb trees too. Sing sing, but different. PS, do you live in a tree? So we're gonna pause right here and take a look at this picture.
So Elliot says that he loves to climb trees. And his pen pal kalash says that he also likes to climb trees. So this is something that is the same, but it's just in different areas of the world. So right here we see that he has a treehouse in the tree, but kalash does not have a treehouse. So that is something that is different, but they are the same because they both love to climb trees. Let's go on to the next page. That is my treehouse where I play. I live in a red brick building with my mom, dad, and baby sister. I live with my family, too. All 23 of us, my mom, dad, sister, brother, grandmother, grandfather, aunties, and uncles, cousins, and our animals. So we're gonna pause right here really quick. So this is something that is the same also they both live with their families.
The only difference is Elliot just lives with his mom, dad and sister, whereas kalash lives with his extended family, meaning his grandparents and some uncles and cousins. And they have a lot more pets. They have pets that will provide milk and it looks like they have some roosters and chickens so they can get some eggs there too. So let's go on to the next page. I have a pet too. But not nearly as many as you. Same same, but different. PS what does it look like where you live? The great river flows through my village, peacocks, dance under the trees, shaped like umbrellas. The sun is giant in extremely hot here. In my city, the sun hides behind buildings as tall as the sky. Taxis and buses and cars fill the streets.
So we are going to stop right here, and I want you to make a prediction on where Calais and Elliot live. So kalash says that he has a great big river flowing through his city and he also has trees that look like umbrellas and peacocks that are everywhere. So let's take a look at that picture. Now make your prediction on where he lives. And then you're going to keep it to yourself and at the end we'll talk about it. Now let's look at where Elliot lives. He lives in a city that has really tall buildings and the streets are always crowded with vehicles. Where do you think he lives? All right. Here, there are few cars and still too much traffic. Same, same, but different. I write a school bus with my friends. So do I, same same, but different. This is our alphabet. And this is our alphabet same but different my favorite classes art, where I can be anything.
My favorite class is yoga where I can be anything, same scene, but different. This is how my friends and I say hello. This is how my friends and I say hello, same same, but different. We're best Friends. Even though we live in two different worlds or do we. Different different but the same. So we're gonna stop on this last page here where it says different different but the same because the boys really are different because of the area and the world that they grew up in. Or currently live in, but they do some of the same things and you wouldn't even know it. Now that we are done with the books, I want you to think about those predictions and all the questions that we had throughout the book. And this is going to be the time that we talk about them. So first, I just want you to think about the book in general. And tell me some of the things that you liked about the book. You can even tell me some things that you did not like about the book.
Now, I want you to think of one of the events in the book and tell me why it stuck out to you. Why do you remember that part of the book? Now my final question to you is, do you think you could put the events of the book in order? Do you think you could start with the first page and tell me what happened to go and go all the way to the end? All right. So now. I picked this book for you today because I wanted to focus on a topic called diversity. And diversity means that something is different. It's not a bad different. It's a good different. It's just something that we are not used to.
So throughout this book, we see Elliot and he lives in the United States. And then we have kalash, which lives in India. So we have two different cultures that we are seeing throughout this book. Even though they are different cultures, some of the things in the book are the same. Like how the two boys like to climb trees and how they both ride the school bus to school. Even though it's not an actual bus that kalash rides in, it still his school bus. That's the kind of buses they use in India.
So being different or having a different culture does not mean that it is bad. It means that we are all eager to learn about that culture. And I wanted to pick this book today because I think that with COVID going on that culture and diversity isn't really talked about and you guys haven't been exposed to very much of it because of it. So I just wanted to leave you with that. This is called same same but different and I would like you to let me know if you liked this book that I read to you. Is there anything that pops out at you? Just have missed July email me. I hope you all have a great day. Bye.
