The rules of integers (add,subtract,multiply,divide)
Hi class, this is no champagne and today I'm gonna teach you about number rules. Another word for number is integer. Any number that you see on a number line is called an integer. So you have zero and then to the right, you have positive one, two, three, four, et cetera. If you see no sign in front of a number, it means that it's positive. We just don't want to write the positive or the plus sign every single time. Two, the left. You're going to have your negative numbers. So this is negative one, negative two, negative three. There are different rules when you add and subtract versus multiply and divide integers. When you add or if something is positive, it means I have.
If you subtract, it means I have to give you. Okay? So let's take any two numbers from this number line. Let's take a negative three and a positive four. So we'll have negative three, we'll do here negative three plus four. Remember this negative means I have to give you remember this positive means that I do it here. That means that I have, let's say, $4 in my pocket. So I'm going to draw $4 bills up here. That's one, two, three, four. Okay? If I have $4 in my pocket, and I have to give you three, one, two, three. That means that I have remember the symbol for I have as a positive. That means I have $1 left over.
Or you just put the number one. Remember, no sign in front of it means that there's an imaginary plus sign there. So negative three plus a positive four is a positive one. Let's take negative three minus four. Remember, this means 5 words. I have two give you. Anytime you see this subtraction sign or negative sign, they're the same thing. So subtraction. Is the same. As negative. They're the same things. This attraction sign also means I have to give you. So I have to give you $3 and I have to give you $4. That means that I have to give you. I remember the symbol for I have to give you is this I have to give you how much. $7. So negative three minus four is negative 7. Negative three plus a positive four is a positive one.
Let's look at multiplication and division. So when you're multiplying. Or you're dividing, you can use what's called the peace symbol. And all you do is draw your capital Y in the middle, put a plus sign at the top and two minus signs at the bottom. This only works with multiplication and division only. With addition and subtraction is I have to give you and I have with multiplication and division, it's the piece symbol. So let's take the same numbers. Negative three times a positive four. All you do in this case, this four with nothing in front of it means that there's an imaginary plus symbol in front of it. You're going to cover up the minus sign and you're going to cover up the plus sign. I'm going to cover up the minus to represent the three. I'm going to cover up the plus to represent the four. That means I'm left with a negative answer.
So my answer is going to be negative. And all you do is multiply these two numbers. The first number when you multiply guys means circles. You draw that many circles. The second number, you draw those lines inside. So I'm going to draw three circles, and I'm going to draw four lines inside each circle, 123-412-3412, three, four. So how many lines do I have? One, two, three, four, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, ten, 11, 12. So that means three times four is 12. So negative three times a positive four is a negative 12. You use your peace symbol and you use your circles in lines. Let's look at a negative three. Times a negative four. Again, we're going to use our P symbol.
The negative for the three, I'm going to cover up my negative. The negative for the four, I'm going to cover up the other negative. That means that my answer is going to be positive. And then all I do is multiply three times four, draw my circles and my lines, which three times four is still 12. So you can have plus 12 or just a number 12. Remember that these means the same thing. Negative three times four is a positive 12. Negative three times a positive four is the negative 12. Negative three times a negative four is a pilot of 12. And that's it.
