Human Footprint Part 2
Science
That's 13,056 pints of milk, per person, per lifetime. But milk is only a tiny part of our diet. As are toddlers grow up into school children, they'll face an avalanche of food to put into their bodies. Already in just two and a half years, they have left the lengthening trail of debris behind them. And much of it, the oils and plastics will easily outlive them. So far, we've seen only the basic consequences of using diapers and drinking milk. Now, a lifetime of meals awaits our young school children. It will add up to quite a hefty helping and an ever growing footprint. We're going to put them on the steps coming out of the door. Well, one of the things that we're doing is actually putting the products out and filming them. And we want to do it in a real way, not sort of cheat it by pressing a button in an edit suite. So they would fill this area there. And we could extend the curve incorrect. We're not using any computer graphics or at all. And I think it sort of gives the whole film a kind of extra edge, if you like. Now, the only thing is, I guess, this lady's going to want to come in and add the back door. We'll talk to her. She's going to back to life. Let's do the back door as well. That's milker is. Action. You know, we're trying to capture a seam here and if we're going to express that theme to the public, we can't be the people that are sitting and rolling examples. We made it a point to get 14,000 quarts of milk filled with water so that we wouldn't have any waste product as a result. Good. This is the story of our human footprint. Now, our American infants have become active children. As they grow, so will their appetites. Good thing we live in the land of plenty. And one thing there's plenty of is convenience foods. We devour our foods in packages. Foods from the microwave, foods we can grab on the run. We need between 1 million 502,000 calories each day to propel us through our busy lives. And as a nation we eat a total of over a billion and a half pounds of food every day. If you add up all the steaks, hot dogs, and hamburgers, each of us consumes in a lifetime, it's more than enough to stalk this store. And it amounts to quite a few head of cattle. Over a lifetime that's nearly 5 bowls like these or nearly two and a half tons of beef, per person. Then there's the pork, wait do you see how much of that we eat? All that bacon and ham adds up to 1.7 tons worth or 6 of these lovely picks. These pigs each weigh 550 pounds, but the largest one comes in at a massive 650 pounds. Making up our lifetime supply of pork, 1.7 tons, but pigs are small game when compared to the amount of chicken will eat in our lifetime will each devour 1423 of them. That's the number of chickens in this pen. 2.3 tons of chicken almost equal to the amount of beef will eat. And we don't stop there. We also love their eggs. America's hands stay busy keeping up with the demand, laying over 210 million eggs every day. In one year, the total egg production across the country is a staggering 76.98 billion. Laid by 255 million birds. We eat 5 eggs a week and soon they start to add up. This is a year supply of eggs, and as we make our way along them, we consume see how 5 eggs a week becomes 21 in a month, which multiplied by 12 months, makes up our annual total of 255 eggs. We love them scrambled. Poached or fried on their own. Or added in cakes, custards and sauces. The ubiquitous egg is so hard to avoid that we eat 1.3 tons of them. To visualize just how many that is, we have gathered together the exact amount we each consume. These eggs are about to expire. Once they are loaded into a giant bucket, we will dump them in order to show you what a lifetime supply of eggs really looks like. Stand aside for the omelet of a lifetime. 19,826 eggs per person per lifetime. Meat and eggs are the dietary Staples and nutritional powerhouses, giving us the protein to grow big and strong. But for day to day energy, nothing compares to carbohydrates, and our favorite source is the potato. We devour them, roasted, mashed, boiled. And best of all, fried. So how many potatoes is the average American eat in a lifetime? The answer is 9917 pounds worth. That's more than four tons about the weight of this tractor and trailer. About 20,000 potatoes in all. But even that's not enough to satisfy our craving for carbs. So we tear into bread. From sandwiches and pizza crusts. Rolls and toast, our footprint includes a trail of breadcrumbs. And just imagine how many wheat fields it takes to make it all. America devotes an area the size of Wyoming, just to wheat fields. Here's the bread, we're laying out a display of all the loaves we eat in a lifetime. That's 55 a year. And when you start to lay them all down, here's how they stack up.
