This video deals with greater than or less than.
This video deals with greater than or less than. When I think of greater than or less than, I see my two symbols here and here, and I pretend that they are Pacmen. The pacman always eats the bigger number.
So, when determining which way my sign is going to turn, I have to figure out which number is bigger. Let us look at our example problem. I have 4,263 and I have 4,662. The 2?s are the same in both problems. The 6?s at the tenths place are the same in both columns. However, the hundredths place determines the difference. I see that I have a 6 on this number and I have a 2 on this number. The fourth place, the thousandths place, is the same. So, my determining place will be on the hundredths. I have a two hundred and I have a six hundred. So, let us look at which one will be bigger. Of course, the 4,662 is bigger. So, I have to make my pacman eat the bigger number.
