Geometry Curriculum Night 2021
Geometry
Hi there, welcome. My name is mister theory and I'm really excited to spend the next few minutes to really help you get to know what to expect from this year's geometry class and also to kind of help you get to know me a little bit. And without further ado, let's just go ahead and learn a little bit about myself. This will be my 8th year teaching. First here at Lincoln high school and first in the Seattle area. My wife and my son and I just moved up from Phoenix, Arizona. I do have my bachelor in masters in science in mathematics with an education emphasis. I got those from the university of Arizona and Grand Canyon university respectively. I am an avid sports fan, really of all sports, but mainly baseball and soccer. And I really like going to the beach, especially now that I have a little one running around. Just makes it a lot more fun, chasing him. So without further ado, let's get into what the class is going to look like. So just to give you a broader scope of where geometry falls in your high school curriculum, the course immediately after geometry is algebra two. So last year, you probably spent time in algebra one. Geometry is kind of going into the spatial explorations of math and then you jump back into algebra two, the following year. All students are required to take three math credits for graduation. This geometry course counts as one of those for the entire year. Next, let's take a look at what you're going to expect to see over the next two semesters. Now, since we've already been in school, a little over a month, we've already finished up topic one. In the foundations of geometry. And our just about wrapping up topic two, which leaves us almost done with quarter one. And you can see from quarter one quarter two, we're going to be working on transformations then triangle congruence relationships and triangles, lots of triangle work here in geometry. In second semester we start seeing shapes with more than three sides in talking about similarity. And then also right triangles and trig. And then quarter four really gets into circles two and three dimensional models and then probability. The major assessments you're going to see in this class are the summative assessments that come at the end of each unit. So throughout a unit, we're taking small quizzes to check in. They're not worth very many points. And those are followed by some of assessment. The 7 of assessment is available for relearning and retake possibilities, more info on that will be coming out as we've now finished up our first unit test. Our students will be able to learn how they can retake parts of the test. In short, each test is split up into sections based off of the topics we covered in that unit. And with those smaller topics, if a student struggled on maybe just one or two topics for a test, they only have to work on relearning those two. Instead of redoing an entire test. Each semester will have a minimum of one PBL project for students to complete on their own. More info on that will be coming later, but you can expect one in each semester in this math class. All right, and to wrap up, how to get in touch with me. So my email is AG theory in Seattle schools dot org. I definitely check and reply email to email. Most frequently, however, I do reply via school G messages and teams messages. But again, the email is the one I checked most frequent and have notifications to you most often. I am available for office hours every day except for Wednesdays from three 35 to four O 5. This is just easiest for me. This is what I'm available after school. Students can stop in to make up work, get help on work. And I know that not everyone is able to make this time. So with that, if this time doesn't work, I would gladly set up another time. This time is just time that I am always available. You do not need to schedule with me. You can just walk in between three 35 and four O 5 and get the help you need. But again, extracurriculars, sports, rehearsals coming to conflict with that time. Just let me know and we can set up another time and get that scheduled. So with that, I hope this was a little more information on what to expect from geometry and if you have any more questions or questions I didn't quite answer or something still in your mind. Please feel free to reach out. I'm gladly replied to that email or school G message, whichever works best for you. And I look forward to working with you and your student throughout the rest of the year. I hope you have a great rest of the curriculum night and I will talk to you all soon. Bye.
