Okay, let’s go and get down to business. I fight as I write with the pad and the pen - a writer with the power to make injustices end. Frederick Douglass: civil rights activist, abolitionist. Okay, let’s go and get down to business. I agitate; never let the enemy rest. If slavery is Lex, put the “S” on my chest. (Verse 1) 1838, I made my escape from the plantation. Now, living free in a city so great. New life in New York, but still on the run as Frederick Bailey. Changed my name to Douglass and married Anna Murray. In Massachusetts, I became an active abolitionist. 1841, spoke out about the Northern church’s prejudice. Many got to hear my skill, my flow, my speaking ability. Became an agent of the Anti-Slavery Society. That was the day opportunity came a knocking at my door. Now, I’m pro with the writing and orating. My brain, writing, speeches, and intelligence proved dangerous to the slaveholding ladies and gents. Even nicer Whites from the North, they just couldn’t see that a former slave from the South could orate like me. So in 1845, I wrote about my experiences - “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass.” My account was so well written it shed some light, giving insight into the slave’s plight. At times I was chased - even beaten just for speaking the truth. Didn’t stop me though; had a mission, so I pushed through. (Pre-Chorus) 2x Never cease. Make them uneasy in their skin. Speak out, speak up until we win. Speak out until we win. (Chorus) (Verse 2) When my narrative dropped, my old owners, they started fuming. I guess you lack appeal when it’s revealed you beat on humans. My owners were upset. To avoid harm and death, I left the country - spoke in England and Ireland next. Leave them speechless with speeches. They stand and clap with the praise. My words flame on; fantastic for setting evil ablaze. Came home in 1847. Now, backed by allies and friends near and far. They gave me money for my freedom, so I started the North Star - a newspaper, for those without a voice. Our motto, “Gender is not a factor when making the right choice. Truth has no color. God is father of all. We are brothers and sisters, so let’s stand together strong and tall.” No epic battle here. Jefferson was right. All people are created equal...
