Erector Set Clock Escapement - Verge and Foliot
All / Health and Physical Education / Weightlifting
This model, with metal-on-metal tick-tock sound, is a version of a 14th century escapement; it was succeeded by the pendulum clock that was much more accurate. The vertical axle is called 'verge'; the verge escapement drives a horizontal balance wheel, called 'foliot'. The rate of the clock could be adjusted by sliding the weights in or out on the foliot bar. In this model, the balance wheel was replaced by two erector set strips. The escape wheel is driven by a weight which is suspended on a sewing thread.
