EFRS Spelling Nonsense words with Norman Nonsense

A quick couple of ideas about using spelling nonsense words.
High teacher Friends, I'm here to just give you a quick couple ideas about using spelling nonsense words. Doctor kilpatrick finds nonsense words helpful because it helps the students with their phonemic awareness of using letter sounds and the letter that actual letter. And also nonsense words are words that the students haven't already heard if a student has past experience with the word already. They've already orthographically mapped it so they're not, they're kind of bypassing that letter sound to letter knowledge. So I have this little guy here, his name is Norman. And Norman can only speak in nonsense words, so every time Norman comes out this students will know that we are going to practice some nonsense words. So Norman comes out and he says, hey, let's practice nonsense words. And he can whisper whisper whisper some nonsense words, and I say, oh, oh, that's a good one. That's a good word.
All right, hey students, Norman wants to know, can you spell blip, blip? And then to make this a quick activity, maybe you only have like 5 minutes. They could spell blip to a partner, and then the next nonsense word you give the partner could spell to them. So no tools that they need, this could be a quick 5 minute activity four or 5 nonsense words and if you're like me and you can't really come up with those nonsense words real fast off the top of your head, appendix H in our equip for reading success book has 3000 nonsense words. So we have all the nonsense words we need. If you wanted to make this a more interactive, small group lesson, you could have letter tiles, Norman comes out in the small group, and he says, we need a little more practice with our nonsense words.
Can you spell enough? And then if they could use their little letters to spell nuts and then practice their letter phone awareness skills to put the letter sounds to the actual letter and what it looks like. Also another thing wouldn't take too long is chalkboards and chuck. The kids like it and then also dry erase boards and dry erase markers. If you wanted to make it a whole group lesson where everybody gets to do it. All right, I hope you guys enjoyed the video. And my idea have a great day.
