Conflicts in Literature
Literature
Hi guys, welcome to English notes of misses eastman. Today we're going to do an overview of conflicts and literature. A conflict is a struggle between opposing forces. Check it out. Opposing looks a lot like the word opposite. And that can expect to our notes on protagonists and antagonists. Don't you think? There are two main types of complex internal conflicts take place in a character's mind. Maybe they struggle with a choice or a struggling with guilt. The other tip of conflict is external conflict. In this case, the character struggles with an outside force, like another person, or a force of nature. Internal conflict is known as character against self. The struggle in the story takes place in the character's mind. A modern example of this could be in The Lion King, when Simba wants to return home, but he's afraid his pride won't forgive him for the death of fossa. The first kind of external conflict is character against character. This can be a physical or intellectual fight, and it doesn't have to be between people. Pixar's famous for its dynamic human animal and robot characters. Larger stories can have a mix of physical and intellectual conflicts. In the princess bride, Wesley has a sword fight with a Neumann toil, and a battle of wits with vizzini. Next up is character against society. The problem are struggling the story pits an individual against the customs of society. It makes them want to write wrongs. In the legend of Robin Hood, a bandit steals from rich government officials, and gives money to the poor people and Nottingham. Character against nature is when the protagonist struggles against the forces of nature to survive, like in hatchet, Brian was survive alone in the Woods after his plane crashes. He tries to find help and wants to be saved before winter sets in. This novel was so popular that Gary Paulson wrote an alternate ending sequel. Brian's winter, which illustrates what had happened if Brian wasn't rescued. Number four is character against Supernatural. The individuals pit against a Supernatural or paranormal force, something unknown. In Charles Dickens the Christmas Carol, the Grady Scrooge is worn by the spirit of his dead business partner Marley to change his ways. And three ghosts visit him to skim straight. Last is character against technology. You may have experienced this when your phone posted a selfie on Instagram without your knowledge. The main struggle in this type of conflict has to center around the technology, and the genres usually science fiction. If you took out the tech, the story couldn't exist. Now I'm going to disappoint a lot of Star Wars fans out there, but Star Wars isn't sci-fi. It's a space opera. We could trade out lightsabers for swords and a pirate ship for the death star, and in the end it would still be a story about a boy and his father. A better example of character versus technology will be racks on the rats of nim by Jane Leslie Connolly. Threats of nim have to rewrite a computer program to keep a dam's floodgates from opening because it would drown their valley. And they're running out of time. To summarize, there are two types and 6 kinds of conflict we'll discuss this year. Have fun identifying them and really take a close look at what types of conflicts can change our characters lives and their view of the world. Created using cartoon.
