Video on the battle of France in 1940.
Alright this is Battle of France in 1940. The French defensive line right here is called the Maginot line. It was, the Germans could not push through this. It was considered impenetrable and for the most part, it was. It was very hard to get through. The Germans would suffer many casualties if they even attempted. So, they considered that the strongest point of their defense. But, the majority of their army was actually lined up here along with the British Army lined up here in anticipation of the Germans who had a couple armies here, just some defensive there. They thought the Germans would attack through the Netherlands and Belgium as they had in World War I. And they were right.
Now what happened was, is the Allies once the Germans invaded - Germans invaded here, they invaded there - the Allies moved up their line here just to keep the Germans out of France. And there were rivers here that made advancing very difficult for the Allies, or for the Axis. And the Allies had manpower advantage, they had equipment advantage but what they forgot to do is there is an area called the Ardennes forest, where the Germans had the majority of their forces. And it was considered to be naturally impenetrable, but the Allies were simply wrong. That?s it. The Germans rushed through the weakly defended area and encircled all the Northern Armies of both Britain and France. They ended up squeezing out the French and destroying most of their army.
The British were able to evacuate at Dunkirk but after that France could not redeploy these soldiers along the Ardennes to protect Paris because or these forces from the Maginot because they were just fixed. They were fixed soldiers. They had no equipment other than the equipment in the Maginot that could not be really moved without large quantities of equipment and rail. So, the Germans then without facing any resistance could go down and force France to surrender in 1940 in just about a month. And then basically Britain would stand alone and that?s where we?ll go next time.
