The symbols we see in America that used to represent something else
Hello, class. Today, we're gonna talk about symbols. A symbol is something that's used to represent something else. Symbols are everywhere even in our daily lives. Most people recognize these famous golden arches because they are a symbol for the popular fast food restaurant. Since a picture of the arches represents McDonald's, the arches are a symbol for McDonald's. Another popular symbol is the peace sign, which is the name state stands for peace, so because a peace sign represents peace, a peace sign of assemble. One more symbol that often causes a smile is the popular Mickey Mouse.
One look at these ears and many people automatically think of Disney. This shows that Mickey is a symbol of Disney because it represents Disney. Fireworks are symbolic of the 4th of July in America, which is the holiday where we celebrate our nation's birthday of independence. Speaking of America, let's talk about American symbols today. I'm going to introduce you to a couple of my Friends and we're going to see how many American symbols we can find in the classroom and online. Hi, I'm Jessica. Hi, I'm Kim. And I'm Sarah, and we're going to go on a treasure hunt. That's right class a hunt. A heart from American symbols. Wow, look what we found here. A picture of one of the most obvious symbols of America. The flag. The American flag has 50 stars, the symbolize the 50 states. And 13 stripes that stand for the 13 original colonies.
This flag is also a symbol of freedom to many Americans. Speaking of freedom, look what we found over here. The Statue of Liberty. The Statue of Liberty was a gift to the American people. From the people of France, but that's not the only thing it stands for to many immigrants. This has long been a symbol of freedom and hope. Okay, class, let's keep looking and see what we can find. Oh yeah, this large ego with the white feathered head and neck is actually a bald eagle. And it is our national bird of America. It stands for the courage, independence, and strength. Therefore, the American bald eagle is a symbol for courage, independence, and strength. Oh well, hook over here. I found a picture of the liberty bell. This is the bell of independence hall in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It was wrong on July 8th, 1776 to proclaim American independence from England. Therefore, the liberty bell will always be a symbol of American independence.
Here's another great American symbol, it's The White House. This is where the American president lives and meets with their cabinet to help make important decisions. This also symbolizes the freedom we have as American people to be able to elect our presidents. Speaking of presidents, here's a picture of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., president Abraham Lincoln with our 16th president, and he issued the Emancipation proclamation that hoped to free the slaves. He was unfortunately killed in 1865, but we celebrated his birthday every February 12th with a holiday. The Lincoln Memorial is a symbol of president Lincoln's memory, and all the great things he did for our country. Another symbolic monument is the Washington Monument, also in Washington, D.C.. This monument symbolizes George Washington, our first president of the United States, who is also the commander in chief of the Continental Army.
This monument was built in his memory, and helps to represent all the accomplishments he made for our country. So the Washington Monument is a symbol for George Washington, the first president of the United States and his accomplishments. Okay, well, class, as you can see, American symbols are everywhere. Even from our currency, a dollar bill has a picture of George Washington. A $5 bill has a picture of president Abraham Lincoln. This is because these presidents help influence American history and therefore they symbolize America. Okay, class, look at this great American symbol I just found.
This is our current president. Barack Obama. He is a symbol of America because anyone who sees Barack Obama thinks of America. Therefore, president Barack Obama symbolizes America. Okay, class. We found so many great American symbols today. That was a very successful treasure hunt. But I hope you guys enjoyed it too. And please keep your eyes open. You'll see American symbols all around. Look, even walking off campus. There it is, the American flag, simple everywhere I tell ya. Keep an eye out.
