Marvelous March was finally here, when warmer weather slowly appeared. Annabelle loved the winter snow, but she loved warmer weather even better. She was able to go outside more and ride her bike and play with her friends. Just as the saying goes, March really did come in like a lion, and on the first day Annabelle still felt the need to wear her big coat, hat, and boots to school. She couldn?t wait for the warmer weather to come because her mom said that she could start gymnastics in the spring. Annabelle loved doing somersaults and cartwheels outside on the grass, which she couldn?t do often in the winter. The lunchroom monitors also took the classes outside for recess when it was warm outside. Annabelle and her friends loved to play on the playground in the school yard. They loved to play freeze tag, Red Light/Green Light 1-2-3, and hopscotch. Sometimes Annabelle carried some sidewalk chalk in her backpack so she could draw the hopscotch board onto the blacktop pavement in the playground area. Annabelle and her friends had not played outside in a very, very long time, and she really wanted to go out as soon as possible. During indoor recess, the students were allowed to build forts with special foam indoor building blocks. Other groups could do arts and crafts or play Women?s History Month with board games. Some students even brought their own activity books from home so they could write, color, or read with their friends. On the second day of March, the weather surprised ever yone, and it reached almost sixty degrees outside. All the classes in the school were excited to be able to enjoy outdoor recess. When Mrs. Mitchell?s class went outside, most of the boys and girls began playing a serious game of tag. The boys chased after the girls, and the girls chased after the boys. Annabelle found this game to be very confusing and disordered. Many of the students got carried away and were a bit rough during the game of tag. Even though she wasn?t crazy about it, for some reason she still played it. During the game, Kaitlyn was tagged by Tyler and then slipped and fell to the Outdoor Recess ground. Tyler turned to her to say he was sorry while she was on the ground, but by that time, Kaitlyn had already started crying. Her pants were torn at the knee, and she was bleeding. Annabelle ran over to Kaitlyn. ?Look what you did now!? Annabelle yelled at Tyler. ?Leave her alone! You?re playing too rough!? Tyler felt bad about what happened and went over to her. ?I?m sorry, Kaitlyn. Are you okay?? Tyler asked with concern. ?Of course she?s not okay! You just knocked her down!? Annabelle yelled. Annabelle wanted to continue yelling at Tyler, but she was more concerned about Kaitlyn. A monitor came over and told Annabelle and Victoria to walk Kaitlyn to the nurse?s office. As Annabelle was leaving, she overheard the monitor Women?s History Month blaming Tyler and all the other students who were running around outside. Kaitlyn was walking slowly with great difficulty to prevent putting pressure on her hurt knee. Annabelle and Victoria walked on each side of her with one arm around Kaitlyn?s waist. Kaitlyn had her hands around their shoulders. Outdoor Recess ?Don?t worry, Kaitlyn, you?re going to be okay,? Annabelle said, trying to comfort her. ?I can?t believe those boys were acting so rough outside. Tyler almost tagged me too, but I got away,? Victoria said. ?I?m never going to play tag again with the boys. They play too rough, and it doesn?t seem like it?s a safe game to play,? Annabelle said. Kaitlyn had stopped crying, but tears were still in her eyes. When they got to the nurse?s office, they couldn?t believe that three other girls were already there. Two of them had scraped hands, and one had a scraped knee just like Kaitlyn?s. When Mrs. Lewis, the nurse, saw Kaitlyn coming into the office, she was very surprised. ?I can?t believe someone else is hurt too from recess outdoors! There must be Women?s History Month a battle going on out there,? Mrs. Lewis exclaimed. Through her tears, Kaitlyn told the nurse everything that happened. Mrs. Lewis said she was going to report these events to the principal?s office since so many accidents happened in one day. Annabelle hoped this wouldn?t happen again as the warmer weather continued. All the students loved going outside, but none of them liked getting hurt. Maybe Mr. Jefferson, the principal, could walk outside during outdoor recess one day and speak to the students himself, Annabelle thought. He could tell the boys not to play so rough. Annabelle didn?t know exactly what was going to happen, but she was sure she didn?t want to play tag the next day. She was going to stay on the swings, slide, and jungle gym only. Outdoor Recess After Mrs. Lewis cleaned the dirt from Kaitlyn?s knee and put on a BandAid, Annabelle and Victoria walked back outside. They noticed that all the students were coming inside now. Thank goodness today?s recess was over. Annabelle hoped it would be counted as a bad memory that would soon fade away. Tomorrow would be a new day. Annabelle still hoped for warmer weather again but not getting hurt outside. She looked forward to just regular playground fun.
