All About the Number 4 (Penny's Number Nook)

Hi boys and girls, welcome back to Penny's Number Nook. I'm glad you are here with me today. But before I get started with our number, I don't know if you've noticed, I have a necklace on today. I have a very fancy necklace on today. And a little girl in my class by the name of, her name is Nevaeh. Nevaeh made me a necklace this week. And this necklace has my name on it. And the thing I told Nevaeh, I was so happy to get my necklace. I have a hard time finding things with my name on it. You know, you can go to the little gift shops and little stores and you can see key chains and things with people's names on them. Very rarely, do you ever see Penny on anything? I'm like, come on, people. You need to make some stuff with Penny's name on it. Hello, I'm here. I'm a person. So, Nevaeh took care of that. She made a necklace with my name on it. And I thought that was very cute. I love my necklace. So thank you, Nevaeh, for thinking of me and putting my name on a necklace. I've worn it every day since she's made it for me. So now, with that out of the way, we can begin on our numbers, and today we're going to concentrate on the number four. So, I'm going to wait on you while you go get the things we're going to need. Remember, you need blank paper, you need your number line. You got to have your number line. You need your crayons, your markers or your pencils, whatever you're going to use for this, okay? So I'll wait on you. A few seconds. While you gather your stuff, all right, you got your stuff. You ready to begin? All right, let's go. Today we're going to learn about the number four, okay? So the first thing we need to do is what? We need to spell the word. Are you ready? F, O, U, R, four. All right, and there's our number four. So if you have a pointer like I do, I have a paintbrush that I use as a pointer, or you can use your finger. I want you to trace the number four there. Okay? To trace it with your finger. Okay, now we'll move on to the writing rhyme that's going to help you remember how to write the number four. Are you ready for it? You can't wait. Oh, I know the anticipation. Let's see. Okay. The writing rhyme for the number four is down across and down some more that's the way to make a four. Okay, so let's do that. Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Very simple. Let's just say it to ourselves. Down, across, and down some more. That's the way to make a four. All right, so get your markers, your crayons, or your pencils. You have them. All right, let's get started. Let's start with the green marker. Okay, ready? Down. Across and down some more. That's the way to make a four. All right? And we're using the 8 colors. Remember that. Next, let's go with the black. Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Next color. Okay, I'm going to let you choose and you tell me, I'm going to use it. I've got my thinking brain on. Okay, you guys say a color out there, and let me see if I guess the right color. I believe I heard someone say red. Okay, got it. I've got my red marker. Now you say the rhyme, and I'm going to make the number quietly. And you say it, okay? Good job. All right. I will pick the next color. And I'm going to choose blue. All right, that's your blue marker. Ready? Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Okay? Someone out there say the next color. I'm reading your minds. Wow, choose a color. And the color, I heard someone say, orange. All right. Everybody get their orange marker. You ready? Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Good job, all right? I've got the next color, and I'm going to choose yellow. Okay, you ready? Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Okay, you have the next color out there. I'm listening. And I hear somebody oh. I just heard someone say purple. Okay, get your purple marker out. Now you say it for me this time. Ready? Go. Good job. All right, let's see. Not counting that black one right there in the middle. Let's see how many colors we've used already. One, two, three, four, five, six, seven. Okay, what color is missing? Do you remember? We have red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, black, and you're right, brown. All right, get your Brown marker. And let's make our four together. Last one. Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. All right, good job. So, you've got the riding rhyme down, right? Because I know you do, 'cause you're just like me, you're gonna say it all day long. Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. Yes. All right, let's move on to the next page. And our next page is, do you remember? That ten frame. Okay, let's see. What shape shall we make today? I think today we're going to make, let's think. How about a rhombus? Remember what I used the fancy word? What's another name for rhombus? Do you remember? A diamond. That's right, we are going to use diamonds. We're going to make a rhombus. And I think that color I'm going to choose. Oh, let's go with green today. All right, let's make some green diamonds or green rhombus. And what number were we concentrating on? The number four, right? Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. So we're going to make our four diamonds. Are you ready? One. Two, two two. And they're kind of four lines to a diamond. Did you see that? One, two, three, four. All right, next, one, two, three, four. And that's two, one, two, three, four, three, and then one more. One, two, three, four, four diamonds. Now let's go back and color our diamonds in. They look better when they're colored in, I think. All right, so remember that's that fancy word I say every week? What are we learning when we use the ten frame? We're learning how to. Sabotage. We can just look at it. Boom. That's the number four. We don't even have to count them, do we? All right, next page is what? Do you remember? You're right. Next we're going to make four tally marks. All right, so again, let's make a number four down here, so we remember what number we're working on. Down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. And are you ready for four tally marks? One, two, three, four. That was a real easy one, wasn't it? All right, we have four Brown tally marks. All right. Last thing we have to do, we have to work on our counting skills. So there's where you're going to need your number line. Everybody go get their number lines. Okay. So what comes before and after the number four? Well, first thing we have to do is we have to find the number four on our number line. Where is it at? We'll go back and forth. You tell me what I'm getting closer to it like you're getting, I'm cold right now, right? I'm looking for the four by getting oh, I just heard someone say you're getting hotter, you're getting hotter, you're getting all your so hot, and boom. I found the number four. Okay, so we have four. What number comes before it? What's that number? You're right. It's the number three. So let's write a number three here. Around the tree and around the tree. That's the way to make a three, okay? Now we need to know what comes after the number four. So we find our four again. There it is. Okay, what number comes after it? You're right, the number five. Good job. And do you remember the counting or the writing rhyme for the number five? Short stick belly fat number five has a hat. Good job. You guys are so smart. You're catching on so quickly. I'm so proud of everybody for that. Now we have to count on from four. So we're going to count forwards. So find your number four again. Right, there it is. Are you ready? Take a deep breath. We've got to count all the way to 20. Four, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20. Good job. All right. Now, what do we have to do? That's right. Now we have to count back from four. So find your four. Now we're going to count backwards. Ready? Four, three, two, one, zero. All right, good job. Well, that was all about the number four. We had, we worked on our counting skills today. Then we worked on our subitizing skills by using our four tally marks. And our four green diamonds, or what's the fancy word? Rhombus. Then we worked on actually writing the number four with the writing rhyme, down across and down some more, that's the way to make a four. And the last thing we did, we had to spell the number four. Let's spell it again. Are you ready? F, O, U, R, four. Oh, good job. I'm so proud of you, boys and girls. You catch on so quickly. You're so, so, so, so smart. Well, with all just like all the other numbers that I've worked on, we have an activity or a game to go along with our numbers. Now for this particular activity, we're going to use something called play dough mats. Okay? Have you ever heard of a play dough mat? Well, there's something new to me too. They've always been out there. I just never really paid attention to play dough mats. But I'm starting to enjoy play dough mats. This particular set of play dough mats is called the spring counting play dough mats. And I found this, I was on my favorite site, Pinterest. I don't know if I'm like, if your mom or dad's like me, I'm on Pinterest all the time. It's very addictive. But I find so many activities and things that I can do in my classrooms, and I can do in my house. Like this particular one. Spring counting play dough mats. And let me get my pointer out here where you can see the side eye went to to get this particular activity was WWW. A moment in our world dot com, okay? A moment in our world dot com. Again, this was another free download, okay? And turn the page and you will see that it has the number in the top corner. Oh, we have a little duck there, and the duck has the umbrella. What do we see a lot of in the springtime? Rain. So this duckling must be expecting a rainstorm to come. What do you think? I think so. And then on the bottom, she has the number word one, O, N, E, and then here we have the ten frame, okay? Well, this particular download goes all the way up to the number, I'll go one, two, skip a few, and the last number is. Let's see. This particular set can't turn my papers. Happens to go up to the number 20, okay? So it has the numbers one through 20. So when you have that spring shower, and we can't get outside, this would be a perfect opportunity to get your spring counting playdough mats out, okay? So let me move that off to the side, and I happen to have one that I'm going to play with. Now, what I did is I went to Dollar Tree. And you haven't seen this particular mat right here. It's a protector. It's like a sheet protector. It's a little more substantial than regular sheet protectors. And then you can just change out your numbers. Gotta move, pardon me, boys and girls, while I slide that back in. Sometimes they're a little hard to slide in the pocket, but that's good because that's going to protect your play dough sheets from the play dough, so you can use them over and over. Okay? So we have the number 7. We have our sheet protector. You could also, if you have access to a laminator, you could laminate each one of the sheets too and use them. But I find this is probably this is a better thing to use around the house. And again, I got it at my local Dollar Tree for $1. Okay, so we've got our play dough mats have been downloaded. We next thing we need is what? Hello, you're right. We need the play dough. And I'm going to be using purple play dough for this particular activity. And let's think of the different things that we could do with the number 7, this play dough mat and our play dough. Well, it's a little duckling is waiting for a rain shower, right? So how about if we make 7 raindrops? So you want to get your play dough out and just make some little balls there. You could design them, you could shape them to look like little raindrops if you wanted to. So then we just put them on that, and that kind of holds them in place. One. Two. A lot of activities that can be done on this play dough mat isn't there. Three. And I love play dough. I mean, come on, who does not love playing with play dough? Even grown-ups love to play with play dough. One, two, three, four, 5. Oh, that one's a little fat one there. It's an odd-shaped raindrop. 6. And one more raindrop. 7. Okay, so now we've got 7 raindrops on our duckling. What's something else that we could do with our play dough? Do you have any ideas? Oh, you're right. We have that ten frame there. So let's work on subitizing, learning to recognize the number 7. So we're going to take our play dough, and we're just going to make 7 balls and place them in our ten free. One, two. Three, oops, it sticks with my fingers. Three. Four. 5. How many more do I need? I'm working on the number 7. A half 5. So what do we need? You're right. We need two more. I'm telling you what, you guys are so, so smart. 5, 6, and one more. 7. Good job. So, right there, I know, bam. 7 round or 7 blobs of play dough, okay? And then we have 7 raindrops. Now the raindrops are a little more hard to recognize. You have to really, you need to count those. But we've got that handy dandy ten frame. All right, I see one more thing on this play dough mat we could do. Does anybody else see it? Do you have any ideas what it might be? Well, I think we need to make a number 7 with play dough. I'm going to leave this big spot right there. Oh yeah, we need to make a number 7. And who does not like to roll snakes with their play dough, right? So we're going to take her play dough and roll it out. Go on and make me a number 7 snake. Everybody needs a number 7 snake. All right, and then once we get our play dough rolled into our snake, we just put it on there. Across the sky and down from heaven, that's the way to make a 7. Okay, was that fun? Yes, it was fun. And again, it was just a simple go and download them. You can go on Pinterest and type in spring counting play dough mats, and it would take your parents to this site where you can download them.
