5 Finger Rule to Help Student Choose the Right Book
Elementary
Let us go over on what are the 5 Finger Rule that Help Student Choose the Right Book
This instructional video was designed to help remind students of the five-finger rule when it comes to choosing just the right book. This five-finger rule can make it very easy to know whether a book is too easy or too hard for you to read.
How do you know if a book is too easy? If you can read all the words on a page and only have trouble with maybe one word, then that book is too easy for you. You should try and choose a harder book.
How do you know you made the perfect choice? If you are able to read a page and only have maybe one to two mistakes when reading, then you probably have a great book. The less mistakes you make, the more you'll be able to understand what you're reading.
If you're making three to four mistakes per page, or you don't understand three or four of the words, go ahead and give it a try. Try reading another page and see if you understand what's happening. If you don't, then maybe the book is too hard. If you do then go ahead and challenge yourself and continue to read the book.
If you make five or more mistakes, then that book is probably too hard for you. But don't worry, with more practice of reading just the right books, eventually, you'll be able to read those books that seem too hard right now.
This is called the five-finger rule because we're using our fingers to help us understand how many words we don't understand on a page. Now, remember to be honest with yourself. If you're not making any mistakes, then try and challenge yourself and read a harder book. But if there's too many mistakes, don't read it because you're not going to understand and it is more important to build that fluency.
Thank you for listening. I hope you remember this rule when you're choosing your next book.
