4Digit# x 1Digit#

Tonight's homework is reviewing multiplying a four digit number times a one digit number. So today in class, we reviewed that there are, we learned two different ways to multiply a multi digit number with a one digit number. So the first way that we learned was using partial products, so to multiply 7628 times three, we're multiplying each value of the digits in my multi digit number. Times my one digit number. So the value of 7 in the thousands place is 7000. 7000 times three is 21,000. 600 times three is 1800. 20 times three is 60. 8 times three is 24. So these are all my partial products and then the last thing that I would do is find the sum of them. So I would add them together and that would give me the product of 7628 times three. The other way that we learn to multiply was by using regrouping, so we start in the ones place 7 times two is 14. So that's a four in the ones place and a one in the tens place. So I brought that. I regrouped that ten up to the tenths place. Then 8 times two is 16, plus one is 17. So again, I put my 7 in my tens place here and regrouped brought my one up to the hundreds place. 9 times two is 18 plus one is 19. So I put my 9 in my hundreds place brought my one up to the thousands place and then two times two is four plus one is 5. So I told the students today, whichever way they like better, whichever way they feel more comfortable with they're using to solve these problems.
