Heating Matter
Elementary / Math / Ratios and Proportions
This lesson appeals to SC standard: 2.P.3A.3: Conduct structured investigations to test how adding or removing heat can cause changes in solids and liquids. Objective: TSWBAT successfully write a sentence or more response to their chocolate experiment. The video shows a shortened version of the lesson. The class conducted two experiments. One experiment was more so of a class observation in which the students watched a candle melt. This experiment took the duration of the day. Students developed a hypothesis prior to the experiment and checked the results at the end of the day. The second experiment required students to melt chocolate in a plastic baggy by using their hands. The kids really enjoyed this hands on lesson! While conducting the chocolate experiment, the children filled out a worksheet describing the different state of matter the chocolate was going through. This worksheet was the formal assessment that was used to assess if the students mastered the learning objective.
