Education
students training video
Hi, I'm sergeant Smith of the past in the IC police department. Our top priority every day is your safety and the security of your campus. In the event of violent activity on your campus, we have a lockdown procedure we call Alice. This video is going to tell you what Alice stands for and how it will affect you as students in the district. Alice is an acronym for alert, lockdown, inform, counter, and evacuate. Remember that Alice is not a linear progressive response. It is more like a list of options.
Alice is a proactive response that gives staff and students options to take versus just waiting for law enforcement to rescue you. The national average response time for law enforcement to this type of incident is 5 to 6 minutes after notification that the incident is occurring has been received. Statistically, most active shooter events are over in under 5 minutes. This means that there is a good chance that law enforcement will arrive after the incident is over. This is a big motivating factor to why our district is moving to a proactive response instead of a passive one. The a analysis stands for alert. The alert is how you are notified that an incident is occurring. When the alert is received, staff and students must act quickly.
The alert may come to the PA system, or you may be told by someone in the building. You may even be alerted by the sounds of gunshots, screaming are actually seeing the intruder. The alert to implement the Alice protocol is Alice Alice Alice or implement Alice. Following the alert that will possibly be more information as to where the shooter is or information you need to know if it is available. For example Alice Alice Alice. There is a man with a gun and the north entrance of the school, the man with the gun is walking toward the nurse's office. At this time, you can pause the video and discuss any questions about alert. The a in Alice. The L and Alice stands for lockdown. Your teacher may choose to lock down after you receive the alert. The Alice lockdown is similar to a lockdown for severe weather or other emergencies. But with a few added proactive differences. First, you will lock the door and turn off the lights.
Next, you are going to barricade the door. Use anything available to you in the classroom. Furniture, bookcases, and cabinets are a good start. The goal is to build a barricade that keeps an intruder out of your classroom, or at least slows them down, so you can evacuate through a window or prepare to counter. Be aware of windows that may allow a violent intruder to see where you are in the classroom. It may be necessary for you to get down below the windows. When barricading, items such as extension cords, belts, or toe straps may be used to wrap around door handles and be pulled by several people, just like in tug of war. This method can be used on both inward and outward opening doors, but works best on an outward opening door where the door opens into the hallway. Some of your doors may have an actuator located at the top of the door.
Again, here you can use an extension cord, belt, or toe strap. The goal of this method is to keep the arms of the actuator from separating and allowing the door from opening completely. Your stops are another good option for doors that open into the classroom. When using doorstops, start by inserting the first door stop directly under the door handle, and work your way toward the hinges using all of the door stops available to you. Every door can be barricaded, regardless of whether the door locks or the direction in which the door opens. You may need to be creative. Don't just give up. You should not just rely on one of these methods alone, but instead combine as many options as you can. Not all classrooms are the same, and you may need to improvise a different plan for your area. This is why it is important to be aware of your surroundings and have a plan in place. Before there is a violent intruder incident.
At this time, you can pause the video and discuss any questions about lockdown. The L and Alice. The I analysis stands for inform. Inform is an extension for the alert. To inform, is sharing real-time information to as many people as possible. It is important to share information you have with others in the building. So that they can choose the best option for their situation. You can use any means available to you like text, social media, email, or phone calls. In some situations, your voice may be the best option. The most important thing is that we alert as many people as possible of the situation. For example, the man with the handgun is now outside the west doors of the media center, he's wearing a green shirt and a black ball cap. Based on this new in developing information, staff and students may decide to do something different than just locking down. The information you share may just save someone's life.
The sea and Alice is for counter. We'll be discussing that last. At this time, you can pause the video and discuss any questions about inform. The eye and Alice. The E and Alice stands for evacuate. Once you receive the alert, you may choose to evacuate instead of locking down. When evacuating, you want to exit away from the threat area. This is where the information received in the alert becomes very helpful. You want to leave the building immediately. You need to run fast, but safely to the nearest exit. If there is not an exit near you or you are barricaded in a classroom, you might have to break out a window and create an exit. If you are a friend, drove to campus, do not go to the car. If you try to leave in a vehicle, there's a good chance you may get stuck in the parking lot by all of the responding officers, or worse, prevent them from getting in the building to help everyone still inside.
The best method is to run on foot. You want to run until you can't see the building anymore, and then find a safe location to stay until the incident is over. Once you are safely away from the building, you can flag down a first responder or a person you know that can help you. You can call a parent or loved one and let them know where you are and that you are safe. Once the incident is contained in the building, school staff and safety personnel will begin assisting those that evacuated. At this time, you can pause the video and discuss any questions about evacuate. The E and Alice. The sea and Alice stands for counter. This can be described as any physical or verbal act besides doing nothing. The reason we are discussing this last is because counter should only be used as a last resort. Counter is used if you come in direct contact with the intruder and can't run away. Your teacher or you might choose to scream and run around the room or throw items at the intruder.
You want to do anything that distracts or disorients the intruder and puts them on the defensive. When the intruder is distracted, you want to either evacuate the area the intruder is in, or if you choose to swarm the intruder to prevent them from hurting anyone else. If, during the counter, the intruder is separated from the weapon, you want to secure the weapon in a safe place out of sight. If the weapon is on the ground, you can place a trash can over it, or if you evacuate with the weapon, you can place it in a trash can and carry the trash can with you. Whatever you choose to do, you do not want the weapon in your hand when police arrive. And all a commotion, you might be mistaken as the intruder. At this time, you can pause the video and discuss any questions about counter. The sea and Alice. I want to thank you all for taking the time to watch this video. I know this isn't the easiest topic discuss, but it's a whole lot easier to come up with a plan now with no stress. One of the great things about a proactive plan like Alice is you can use it anywhere in your life. You need to. So take advantage of this time and come up with a plan. Thank you and be safe.
