To me, teaching is the most rewarding profession there possibly could be! It is a great honor and responsibility to be awarded such a title! I currently teach many subjects in speaking engagements, in my books and audio products, and on my website, RiverRainCreative.com, which focuses on the arts. I officially started teaching when I was 13, about 30-something years ago, when Mom suggested I teach private piano lessons for cash (GREAT IDEA, MOM!). According to her, I also taught my younger brother to read and swim, but I don't remember it, and he won't admit it, so we'll just start with me teaching since 13. LOL Since then, I have raised my daughter, now 21 and in her third year of college, and taught her many things. This includes homeschooling her on purpose in her 6th and 7th grades; then wisdom entered into me and I sent her to private school the next five years! Anyway, I have proof that MANY things I've taught her actually stuck, so thank goodness for that! During most of those years, I also taught numerous children (mostly elementary ages; my niche is 3-5 grades) in various arenas, from church and nonprofit groups--some of which I created myself-- plus substitute teaching in public and private schools. Also, after applying for a PARAprofessional position at a local public school, I was offered a full-time Teacher of Record position to teach piano. Since I love kids, like more money, and have 7 years' experience playing and teaching piano, I said YES. What happened next was an amazing and (MOST MOMENTS!) highly rewarding experience, during which time I FINALLY SUBMITTED TO THE PLAN for me to become certified. I now teach math and English at a small public school about 35 minutes from my house. We are having fun and the kids are growing in multiple ways! In addition, I have been writing (definitely a form of teaching!) since I was 9, when the fourth grade teacher told my class to write and present a poem. I wrote several, and my mom (a very enterprising lady!) helped me submit one to Grit Magazine, where I was awarded a letter of congrats, a real dollar bill, and a copy of the magazine in which my poem, "Wild Mustange" was published by the time I was 10. I was hooked! So I have shared many of my writings with children throughout the world, from serving as a columnist for "For Kid's Only" for Cfaith.com for a year, to publishing many more works given to those whom I taught. The past few years, I've written many children's books, and recently published the first in my series, Book One of Princess Pearl, P.O.W.E.R. Girl! (Purposeful Operations With Eternal Rewards)! So, after earning my Bachelor's of Arts and Applied Sciences degree in business from Texas A&M University-Texarkana in 1998, I took the plunge and entered a certification program. I took 108 hours of that. Meanwhile, I've continued to sub and am now in the Masters of Arts in Teaching program at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia, AR. I like it for many reasons--including the fact that it is 100% online! GOD IS GOOD and I look forward to continuing to serve with my fellow teachers to shape these leaders to be positive and successful in promoting the good of humanity throughout the world!
