In The Snakes' Disguise, snakes change themselves in order to win the friendship of the people. At one point some snakes say "I they do not like us as we are, we no longer want their friendship!" But other snakes say "It may be that if you want someone's friendship, you must make an effort to understand them."

The Snakes' Disguise is a fanciful "porquoi" type of story, explaining the origin of one of our favorite pets. This may not be in agreement with scientific thinking about animal origins. But scientists and storytellers have a basic skill in common: wonder. When we wonder about the world, we see how things relate and fit together. The Storyteller sees how a snake is like a cat. Scientists see how a bird is like a dinosaur.
