Andersonville prison was built in 1864 ,near the town of Andersonville in Southwest Georgia. Officially named Camp Sumter, the most notorious civil war first 14 months of the stockade.
During the operation 12,912 died ,about 100 prisoners died per day.It was build only to accommodate up to 10,000 captured soldiers were jammed inside the prison, enlisting around 45,613 men. The prisoners died from disease overcrowding or exposure. The conditions were very harsh. Shelter was reduced to shelter huts made of wood, tent fragments, or holes in the ground. Many prisoners had no shelter from rain, heat, and cold. The food they ate was 11/4 pound of corn meal or 1 pound of beer 1/3 lb of bacon. There was no clothing provided. Many of the prisoner left with only rags or fragment of clothing.
