Teacher Tipster (Power Towers)
Math
My music hits me so hard. It makes me say, oh my lord. Thank you. Oh, hey guys. Mister Smith here would teach your tips to dot com. Tell me that you today with a tip on how to learn basic math facts and also sight words. I'm always looking for ways to tap into things that kids are already excited about. They're already pumped up and half the job is done. And one thing I saw over the last few years is the whole cup stacking praise, okay? They stack these cups up as fast as they can. I was like, um, how can we use that in the class? So what you do is you buy a pack of little bathroom cups and you're gonna ride your math facts or sight words on the bottom of them. You're gonna create a game called power towers, okay? I store them in Pringles can. You can store them however you like, but this is a great way to store them. Let me kind of show you what power towers looks like. This is a math facts power tower game. Looking kind of raggedy actually, I need to make some new ones. But they've lasted a couple years, okay? On the bottoms of each cup, you're gonna write basic math, math facts. That one shows one plus one, here we've got 6 plus zero. Two plus one. 5 plus one. And the basic rules of the game is, before you can stack a cup, you need to complete that math fact. So 5 plus one, the kids will say 5, 6. Okay, and then they can stick. Start making their pyramids. Next is one plus four. That's 5 before they can stack it, they've got to do the math. So you can imagine with this whole tub or this whole tube of math facts they end up making these towers almost as tall as they are. Here is what the site boards look like. You've probably all got sight word list that you're working on on the bottom here. We've got the word sunshine, the word blank. So we're tracks, okay? It works the same way as math before they can add it to their tall tower. They have to say the sight word. Just a fun way to practice those things that you want to be automatic. Quick math facts, quick sight words, and you've got a fun game that the kids are going to love. So there's your tip for the day. I hope it helps you out in the class.
